title: Manage Tags
description: Create tag groups and tags, assign them to courses, and filter your catalog by tag in Edvello.
---

Tags let you label courses so admins, tutors, and students can filter and find them faster. This guide covers creating tag groups and tags, assigning tags to a course, and filtering your course list by tag. For what tags are and how scope and permissions work, see [Tags](/reference/tags).

## Who does what

- **Admin** — creates and edits tag groups and tags, and sets each tag's color.
- **Tutor** — assigns existing tags to courses they manage.
- **Student** — filters and discovers courses using tags; no setup needed.

See [Roles and Permissions](/organization-and-team/roles-and-permissions) for how these roles work elsewhere in the dashboard.

## Create a tag group

Tags are organized into groups, for example `Difficulty`, `Technology`, or `Job Offering`. Edvello's own create-tag form calls this a tag's **Category**. You need at least one tag group before you can create a tag.

### 1. Open Tags

From the admin dashboard sidebar, under **Create**, click **Tags**. This opens `/org/[slug]/tags`.

### 2. Create the group

If you don't have a tag group yet, click **Create Tag Group** in the empty state. Otherwise, open the dropdown next to **Create Tag** and choose **Create Tag Group**. Fill in **Group Name** and an optional **Description**, then click **Save**.

Repeat for each category you want to filter by. A course can carry tags from more than one group at once, for example one `Technology` tag and one `Difficulty` tag.

## Create a tag

### 1. Open the create-tag form

Click **Create Tag** in the top right of the Tags page. This button stays disabled until at least one tag group exists.

### 2. Fill in the tag

Enter a **Tag Name** and an optional **Description**. Use the **Category** dropdown to choose which tag group this tag belongs to.

### 3. Pick a color

Click the color swatch and choose one of the 10 preset colors from the popover. The color follows the tag everywhere it shows up: the Tags table, the course settings tag picker, and course cards.

### 4. Save

Click **Save**. The tag appears in its group's rows on the Tags page.

To change a tag or group later, hover its row and open the actions menu, then choose **Edit Tag** or **Edit Group**.

## Assign tags to a course

Tags aren't attached to a course automatically. You assign them per course.

### 1. Open the course's Settings tab

From the **Courses** list, open a course, then go to **Settings**.

### 2. Add tags

Scroll to the **Tags** section and click **Add tag**. A popover lists every tag grouped by category. Click a tag to add it, click it again to remove it. Selected tags show as chips above the picker; you can also remove one directly from its chip.

### 3. Save changes

Click **Save Changes**. This is the same screen a Tutor uses to tag a course they're assigned to. No separate admin action is needed for that step.

## Filter courses by tag

Once courses are tagged, filter by tag using the same URL query pattern anywhere in the app: `?tags=<comma-separated-tag-slugs>`.

- Single tag: `/org/acme/courses?tags=beginner`
- Multiple tags: `/org/acme/courses?tags=beginner,react`
- Public catalog (your academy's `/courses` page): `/courses?tags=beginner,react`

You don't have to build the URL by hand. On the admin **Courses** list, use the tag filter control above the course list to check one or more tags. Edvello updates the `?tags=` parameter and reloads the filtered list for you. The public course catalog has its own **Filter** panel with a **Tags** section that works the same way for visitors browsing your academy.

### Deep-link from the Tags page

The **Total Courses** column on the Tags page is a link: click the number next to any tag to jump straight to the admin course list pre-filtered to that tag (`/org/[slug]/courses?tags=<tagSlug>`). Use this to see what's tagged with something before renaming or deleting a tag group.
